My name is Yash Gupta, and I am a junior at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA. I myself have worn glasses since I was only 5 years old. As a freshman at Northwood High School however, I broke my glasses sparring taekwondo and had to go to school without them for about a week as a new pair was made. I began to appreciate glasses, which I initially took as an afterthought, and their impact on my education. Without glasses it is impossible to focus, see, or learn in the classroom, and after this incident I realized the importance they had on my own life. After some research, I learned that there were millions of children who lacked a basic pair of glasses, even though millions of pairs were discarded annually, and I founded Sight Learning, a 501(c)(c) certified non-profit organization that collects and distributes used eyeglasses to students around the world who need them and makes sure that every child has an opportunity to receive a quality education.
